Keeneland Saturday Picks — Elkhorn Stakes (G2) Analysis (April 19, 2025)

Race 9: 1 1/2 Mile (Turf) Grade 2 Elkhorn Stakes

#9 Missed the Cut (6/1) – Cherie DeVeaux isn’t having the meet she hoped for, but the Conductor thinks she picks up a stakes win today. This gelding had a brutal trip off a long layoff last time. He was pulled up sharply on the 1st turn, and finished sneaky well against the frontrunner flow, galloping out in front. Gaffalione may have been told to save this one for Keeneland… Missed the Cut is going to run a monster race, the only concern is the post.

#1 Rebel Red (8/1) – The only other horse the Conductor will be using in this race is Missed the Cut’s stable mate. He was also prepped off the bench last time, running a strong late pace figure in a merry go round race. Jose stays aboard and Rebel Red gets a favorable inside draw.

Race 11: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) Alw 120000n1x

#9 Askari (10/1) – This gelding showed real talent on the turf in 2023 and took a long hiatus to get back to the track. He’s been rounding back into form at Turfway this winter and this looks like the spot where he peaks. Cutting back in distance exiting and switching back to the turf for the first time this year, Askari should run a career best effort. Let’s end the card with a bang.

Keeneland and Oaklawn Park: Apple Blossom Day Key Horses

A Girl named Patsy ran 2nd at 19/1 yesterday, hopefully you passengers were able to make a few bucks. Another big Saturday of racing ahead with the race of the year to date. In the Apple Blossom, the Conductor will be having wine and swiss tonight. Let’s Ride.

Race 7: 5½ Furlongs. (Turf) F.Alw 83000n2x

#8 Violenza (10/1) – Drawn well to the outside today, this filly ran a very strong 2nd off the layoff last time. She has a very solid 3-year-old foundation and with natural maturity she’s right there with this group. 5 1/2 furlongs is perfect for her.

Race 8: 1 1/16 Mile. OC 80000n3x

#1 Final Jeapardy (8/1) – His last two races on a fast dirt track in the Morey barn are very fast on figures. The favorites in here have question marks and he’s working well. His late pace figures suggest the added distance will help his chances.

Race 9: 1½ Mile. (Turf) G2 Elkhorn Stakes

#7 North Dakota (10/1) – He had no chance last time trying to rally into a slow pace. He beat the favorite in here two back and should get a more favorable trip today with a quicker pace up front. The Conductor would love anything over 6/1.

Race 9: 1 1/8 Mile. G2 Oaklawn H.

#3 Fearless (7/2) – The Conductor liked to see that he can stay closer to the pace and still finish like he did last time. He’s working up a storm and has always possessed major talent. He will not stop, he has some of the strongest late pace figures you’ll see on dirt.

Race 11: 1 1/16 Mile. F.G1 Apple Blossom H.

*Gullet Shot of the Day #2 Swiss Skydiver (2/1) – Now this is the type of race that puts asses in seats. The two big girls square off and there is a lot of steam behind the 3rd choice, #3 Letruska (4/1), who will be on the early lead. The Conductor doesn’t see Swiss Skydiver letting her get too far away early and thinks Albarado will make the first move on the far turn. #6 Monomoy Girl (1/1) will then follow closely and hopefully we get a stretch duel for the ages. When Swiss Skydiver turned away Authentic in the stretch of the Preakness, his hair stood up. He thinks this girl is the best horse in training and Monomoy Girl won’t be able go by. He’ll be singling the #2. Skip.

There wasn’t much good yesterday at Keeneland after the lock got home. We need prices Conductor! Let’s Ride.

 

Race 1: 1 1/16 Mile. MC 30000

#4 Lovesomuch (9/2) – Not much to like in this group, he has upside switching back to dirt.

Race 2: 6 Furlongs. F.Clm 20000n2L

#4 Tally Ho (3/1) – She looks like a standout.

Race 3: 7 Furlongs. F.MC 20000

#5 Hassle (20/1) – She has early speed in a race devoid of pace and this group is weak.

Race 4: 1 1/8 Mile. (Turf) Alw 85000n3x

#4 Shahroze (3/1) – He’s getting better with every start and was very impressive in win last out.

Race 5: 6 Furlongs. F.Clm 40000n2L

#4 Hoptown Honey (12/1) – Her figures fit and she loves to hit the board. The Conductor will key her underneath in the exacta and tri.

Race 6: 1 1/8 Mile. Clm 20000n2L

#2 Hollywood Strike (5/1) – 2nd off the layoff, he’s another one that doesn’t like to win but a great key underneath with a sprinkle on top.

Race 7: 5½ Furlongs. (Turf) F.Alw 83000n2x

#1 Closer Still (8/1) – This girl will go guns blazing on the front end. Hoooolllldddd!!!!!

Race 8: 6 Furlongs. OC 75000n1x

#10 Distant Shore (4/1) – 2nd off the layoff, he’s working well and getting better with each start.

Race 9: 1½ Mile. (Turf) G2 Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes

*Gullet Shot of the Day #6 Tiz a Slam (15/1) – He got in great form last summer and has big races to run back to.  The Conductor wants him on the lead.

*Never a Doubt Chad Brown Lock #1 Highest Honors (3/1) – Word on the street at Keeneland is that he’s the goods.
