Fair Grounds: Risen Star Stakes Day Key Horses

Horses and jockeys starting a race at Fair Grounds Race Course with starting gates open.

One shorty yesterday and another 24/1 shot running 2nd in the finale at Gulfstream. Big Risen Star Stakes Day of racing ahead of us and it looks like the late pick 5 at Fair Grounds will stay on the turf. Let’s Ride.

Race 9: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) F.Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes

#3 Pass the Plate (10/1) – This filly is in good form, running well on and off the turf in her last 3 starts. She’s run very strong late pace figures and hasn’t been aided by fast paces. She proved she can handle good turf last time as well.

Race 10: 1 1/16 Mile. G3 Mineshaft Stakes

#6 Sonneman (8/1) – The Conductor is against #4 Maxfield (4/5) in this spot. He’s had too much trouble staying on the racetrack. Sonneman had a tough trip last time being wide on the turns and trying to close into a slow pace. He never stopped trying and should improve off that effort.

Race 11: 1 1/8 Mile. (Turf) G3 Fair Grounds Stakes

#6 Logical Myth (9/2) – This gelding continues progress in the Joe Sharp barn and is a ridiculous 5/6 at Fair Grounds. He’s proven over good turf and is working well. #4 Danceteria (6/1) also has a big chance in here as the class of the field.

Race 12: 1 1/16 Mile. F.G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes

#8 Travel Column (2/1) – This filly looks like a good one. Single.

Race 13: 1 1/8 Mile. G2 Risen Star Stakes

*Gullet Shot of the Day #10 Santa Cruiser (15/1) – He had a brutal trip last time. He was completely shut off at the break and then tried to close into a slow pace. The Conductor liked his effort after the beginning and ran fast to break his maiden two back. He can surprise at a big number.

The Conductor’s Div 1 Risen Star Stakes Preview

Two horses racing closely with jockeys in colorful silks during a horse race.

Its getting to that time of year, the first Saturday in May is going to be here faster than Conductor downing a tall glass of stew. The first major prep races are Saturday and the fields are drawn for the two divisions of the Risen Star Stakes. Last years races proved to be very key to the triple crown races. What will this year’s results bring? There are no certainties other than a lot of money going into the Conductor’s pocket. Let’s Ride.

Race 12: 1 1/8 Mile. G2 Risen Star Stakes Division 1

#1 Digital (6/1) – He had a very favorable trip last time up close to a very slow pace and couldn’t get the job done. He’s not for the Conductor.

*#2 Silver Slate (4/1) – The running styles in this race are very intriguing. You have a group that have only won gate to wire and many deep closers. The ones that can lay close to the pace and get first run will have the advantage and this boy looks like he’ll get the trip. He had trouble at the break last time and rallied for a strong 2nd in the G3 Lacomte stakes. His early pace figures sprinting show that he has enough tactical speed to be in a much for favorable position early.

#3 Ready to Roll (20/1) – His maiden win was a slow-paced gate to wire victory in the slop. Pass

#4 Perfect Revenge (20/1) – He has the most experience in the field and his last two efforts on dirt have been much improved. Another step forward and he could hit the board at a massive number.

#5 Moon Over Miami (10/1) – This colt’s maiden breaker was impressive, and he had a brutal trip last time. The Conductor won’t talk you off him.

#6 Sashaahakemeup (20/1) – No excuses last time, no chance.

#7 Blackberry Wine (5/1)

5/1 on a gate when he’s only proven he can win on the front end of slow paces? Suckers bet.

#8 Enforceable (7/2) – This colt is the class of the field, but do you really want a favorite that will be coming from dead last? He’s not for the Conductor.

#9 Mr Monomoy (6/1) – He should have done more with his trip in the Lecomte.

#10 Farmington Road (8/1) – He looks to get a favorable trip, but this may be asking a little too much. His win last start bodes well for #5 Moon Over Miami (10/1).

#11 Scabbard (12/1) – There is no chance this colt will go off at those odds. He’s another deep closer and will drop way back from the 12 post. That said, he has talent and upside 2nd off the layoff. If somehow he doesn’t take money at the windows the Conductor will include as a backup.

Massacre Monday: The Conductor’s Plays at Fair Grounds

Horses lined up at the starting gate of Fair Grounds Race Course with jockeys preparing for a race.

What a weekend at Gulfstream Park.  The rain was a major buzz kill on Saturday and pretty much threw all the Conductor’s pre-work out the window, but that’s how the chips fall sometimes.  The Conductor was scramblin and gamblin all day, but we managed to survive the weekend, play some golf, and drink many, many stews.  The Conductor is a very tired man on this Monday, and I thought he would keep the train in the station.  Obviously, I was wrong, and the Conductor is right back to work like the leader that he is. “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.” The Conductor wants to play Fair Grounds, Let’s Ride.

Race 1: 1 Mile. S.Clm 12500n4L

#4 Fire Lake (7/2) – He should go right to the front and make the rest pass him.

Race 2: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.Clm 150002nL

#3 Brenda’s Fever (9/2) – She’s taking a big drop in class and ran better than it looks last start moving early into a hot pace.  The Conductor would love 9/2.

Race 3: 1m70yds. Clm 30000b

#5 Got Gold (7/2) – This colt shortens a 1/16 mile and has a pace advantage over this group.  Getting an uncontested lead will make him very dangerous.

Race 4: 1 Mile. (Turf) MC 30000

#6 Maglio (6/1) – Trainer Brad Cox is 24% with a +$0.42 ROI debuting maiden claimers this year.  The runners with experience in here aren’t much.

*Update – Wrong Days Race 4 that’s my fault as the scribe

Race 5: 6 Furlongs. S.Clm 5000n2y

*Never a Doubt Work Week Starter Lock of the Day #4 Snapper Bite (8/5) –  The others don’t stand a chance.

Fair Grounds

Race 6: 1 Mile. (Turf) S.Mdn 38k

#12 Typhoon Tycoon (8/1) – He split a 10-horse field at this level and has been clipped since.  With solid connections, the Conductor can see this colt taking a big step forward.

Race 7: 6 Furlongs. F.OC 50000n1x

*Gullet Shot of the Day #1 Lunar Orbit (5/1) – She’s dropping in class and her win two starts back at Fair Grounds was the fastest race in the field on the Conductor’s numbers.  5/1 would be grand larceny.

Race 8: 7 ½ Furlongs. (Turf) F.MC 30000

#5 Enchanted Emma (9/2) – Same logic as race 4.

Race 9: 6 Furlongs. S.Clm 5000n3L

#1 Canjun Carmelized (5/1) – The rail has been great at Fairgrounds this meet and his numbers make him very competitive at this level.
