An easy 4/5 winner Friday at Gulfstream, but the two prices never threatened. A big day is coming, the Conductor can feel it in his plumbs. Let’s Ride.

Race 5: 1 Mile. (Turf) Clm 50000b

#4 Read On (6/1) – This colt ran the fastest last race in the field and will still likely be ignored by the public. That’s because that race was vs weaker over synthetic. However, his past turf form fits with this group and he has a tactical advantage here. There is absolutely no early speed in this field. Read On broke his maiden going gate to wire at this distance over this Gulfstream turf course and he can do it again today. He’ll be setting slow fractions on the lead and can steal it on the front end.

Race 9: 5 Furlongs. (Turf) F.OC 25000n1x

#2 Queen Karima (7/2) – This filly showed real talent starting her career sprinting this -furlong distance at Gulfstream. She went off form after shipping up to Monmouth, but she’s had a 6-month break since. She’s working well for a barn that can win off the layoff and has an early pace edge over this field. Her speed is extra dangerous going this short.

Race 12: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) F.OClm 35000

*Gullet Shot of the Day #1 No Vella (20/1) – Can we go 3/3 with frontrunners Saturday at Gulfstream? The Conductor will be betting we can. This mare’s past turf figures certainly fit with this group, and she’s 5/13 at the distance. The layoff is obviously a concern, but we’ll be more than compensated with her price. They will be forced to use her early speed from the rail and she looks to get an ideal trip. She’ll be loping along setting slow fractions and the other jockeys will discount her and wait too long. That will be their demise and the Conductor’s coal haul.

The Conductor saw the ball well Thursday. A 5/2 winner, a 20/1 shot who lost a photo, and 4/1 2nd is a good sign of things to come. While it could have been a banner day, we will focus on the positives #matureductor. Gulfstream better protect its neck. Skip.

Race 2: 5 Furlongs. (Turf) F.Mdn 89k

#5 Definite Diva (8/5) – This filly was stuck on the rail vs the boys last time at Gulfstream and never got out. She galloped out in front of the pack and showed that she was itching for room to run. She ran very well in her debut as too, after being slammed at the start. The Conductor doesn’t typically talk up chalk, but he can see her being a lukewarm 2/1 favorite since she has yet to run fast speed figures. If that is the case, the Conductor will hammer this filly. He sees her obliterating this field with a clean trip. Definite Diva has talent.

Race 5: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.MC 25000

*Gullet Shot of the Day #2 Lady Monique (15/1) – This filly didn’t have the early speed to have and chance sprinting on the synthetic last time. She finished well down the stretch and looks poised to stretch out in distance. This move is Trainer Guadalupe Preciado’s specialty. He’s 27% with a +$2.12 ROI this year with first time routers. Exiting that 5-furlong sprint, she’ll be up close to a moderate pace and can light up the tote at a big number.

Race 8: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.Mdn 89k

#7 Celebrity Ro (6/1) – This filly was well bet on debut at Gulfstream for the Bryan Lynch barn. She had no chance that day after a poor start. She was well back in a merry go round race with a slow pace up front. The Conductor likes that Jose Ortiz stays aboard as well. She’ll take a big step forward after all the adversity she faced last time. 5/1 or better is certainly worth a bet.

0/3 Wednesday to start the work week. The Conductor should have never taken the train down to Gulfstream. We’ll be broke at this rate before Keeneland even opens. Skip

Race 4: 1 1/16 Mile. (All-Weather) Clm 16000n3L

#4 Bringer of Rain (9/2) – This gelding ran sneaky well vs tougher on turf last time. He was up close to a scorching pace for the level and distance and rightfully faded late in the stretch. Now he drops in class and switches to the surface and distance where he’s run his best. The Conductor would make him favored vs this field.

Race 5: 7½ Furlongs. (Turf) Mdn 89k

#9 Fly Right (6/1) – This colt has by far the best turf form in the field. He rain well 1st off the layoff on synthetic last time chasing the lone speed, who set a slow pace. Now he switches back to his preferred surface and cuts back in distance. His turf form last year screamed he needed to try shorter and he’ll finally get his chance today.

#6 Kake’s Arrow (20/1) – There is a bomb that intrigues the Conductor in this maiden race. This colt showed good early speed sprinting last time. He had an impossible turf trip pressing a quick pace 4-wide and uncovered the entire turn. Stretching out in distance for the first time today, he has upside and may not stop running attending slower fractions. Kate’s arrow can make up for a lot of sins.

Race 8: 1 Mile. (Turf) Alw 25000s

*Gullet Shot of the Day #2 Backchat (6/1) – This gelding ran the best last race in this field. That effort will likely be ignored by the public because it was over the synthetic and vs state breds. However, he’s won over this Gulfstream turf course before, and his turf numbers fit with this group. In good form and with a nice inside post, the Conductor will gladly take 4/1 or better.

An 8/1 gullet shot Sunday that needed one more jump… More pain and rain in forecast at Gulfstream this weekend. The train continues onward. How much further onward? The Conductor is not sure, but the coal pile is slowly dwindling. Hopefully, we don’t have to throw a few passengers out the window to lighten the load. Skip.

Race 3: 1 Mile. Clm 6250n3L

#4 Gonna Be Epic (12/1) – This gelding has been progressing at Tampa vs tougher and now ships to Gulfstream for a hot Delgado barn. His two wins are over this dirt track and his speed figures fit right in with this group. 5/1 or better works for the Conductor, hopefully the morning line maker is correct.

Race 5: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.Mdn 89k

*Gullet Shot of the Day #1 Positive Carry (9/2) – This is another morning line that is likely too high, but 3/1 or better is still a play for the Ductor. This filly ran a very good 2nd at Saratoga in her debut vs a much saltier group. Her return race off the layoff last time was better than it looks as well. That effort was over the synthetic and she sustained her finish despite being wide around both turns and closing into a slow pace. With a nice inside draw here and getting back to her preferred surface, the Conductor will be surprised if she doesn’t get her picture taken.

Race 9: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.Alw 25000s

#2 Dontmesswithtess (8/1) – This mare was favored in her last start at this level and something clearly went wrong. She’s had a two month break since and has been working well for solid connections. Both of her turf wins have come over this Gulfstream turf course and she has a class edge over this field. If Maker is bringing her back at the same level, then she’s still has something left in the tank. With a nice inside draw Tess can show these ladies who’s boss.

Another gullet shot scratch and two bad picks Saturday.  The Conductor is a very grumpy man. Gulfstream is really grinding his gears and he will not allow this treatment any longer. 3 for 3 Sunday and give the passengers coal to fire on the Super Bowl. Let’s Ride.

Race 2: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.Mdn 89k

*Gullet Shot of the Day #8 Sands of War (8/1) – This filly is well bred and took some money in her debut at Saratoga last summer. After setting a quick pace over a good turf course, she faded early. She returns off the bench with Lasix, is facing a weaker group and will try a firm course for the 1st time. DeVaux horses are ready to run off the bench and it’s a positive sign that Jose Ortiz takes the mount for a barn he rarely rides for. She has the early speed to work out a good trip from the 8 post.

Race 5: 1 Mile. (Turf) S.OC 20000n1x

#6 Shankar (4/1) – This gelding has yet to run a bad race on turf or synthetic in his career. Last time on the synth off a layoff, he made a nice middle move into a slow pace. Now he switches back to turf and will be more fit 2nd off the bench. If he improves at all off that last effort, like most Saffie Joseph runners do at Gulfstream, he’ll be tough to beat.

Race 10: 1m70yds. (All-Weather) F.MC 12500

#3 Lady Bonheur (12/1) – There is no horse in this low level maiden claimer that has run par for this level. There is only one runner in this field that has the potential to pop a big number and its this filly. She was well bet in her debut vs tougher and broke thru the gate at the start. You can ignore that effort and she turns with Lasix and blinkers added for strong connections. If she is really double digit odds, you must play her.

The Conductor’s gullet shot was steamed down to 5/1 Friday at Gulfstream and just couldn’t hold off the favorite. Painful. That’s the game we play. Dust yourself off and try again tomorrow, even though you hate the pony gods. Skip.

Race 2: 1 Mile. (Turf) Mdn 89k

#2 Fly Erik Fly (9/2) – This colt was clearly prepped in his debut sprinting on synthetic. Jose grabbed him right out of gate and didn’t ask him to run until they entered the stretch. He made up ground in the stretch and galloped out well in a merry go round race. Now he stretches out on the turf and Irad takes the mount with a nice inside draw. Today’s the day they want him to graduate, and the Conductor sees him doing so with a big step forward in start number two.

Race 6: 1 Mile. (Turf) Mdn 89k

#1 Cptbobsbtwentynine (9/2) – This gelding was well bet at Saratoga in his debut last summer, in a sprint taken off the turf. He ran well that day despite a poor start and a bad trip. He returns as a gelding and gets to try turf for the first time. He’s working well and Irad hops aboard with another inside post in a turf route. None of the many 1st time starters in here intrigue the Conductor.

Race 12: 1m70yds. (All-Weather) Clm 16000n2L

*Gullet Shot of the Day #9 Basketball Jones (9/2) – This gelding took a big step forward at Gulfstream 1st off the claim for Michael De Paulo last time on turf. He pressed a hot pace 3-wide and uncovered around both turns and still hung on for third. He drops in class today and has the early speed to get the lead or the two path moving into the first turn. If he can repeat his last effort with a cleaner trip, Basketball Jones dunks on this field. 9/2 would be a gift from the pony gods to end the card.

Not the Thursday the Conductor was looking for. The Gullet shot scratched and we were nosed out of a 5/1 winner in the finale. Alas, it is a new day and our horses will be bigger, faster and stronger. Let’s mine Gulfstream’s coal. Skip.

Race 1: 1m70yds. (All-Weather) Clm 12500b

#6 Backwoods Boogie (7/2) – This old gelding has found his form since moving to Gulfstream synthetic routes. He’s outrun his disrespectful odds in his last three starts. All three of those efforts make him a win contender vs this field and the Conductor sees no reason why he won’t produce another one.

Race 5: 5 Furlongs. (Turf) F.Mdn 89k

#11 Halstyn Rose (6/1) – Nobody in this field has run a turf sprint close to par for this level. There are also many 1st time starters with weak connections and average work tabs. This filly draws in after scratches for the red hot Brian Lynch barn and Jose Ortiz takes the mount for an outfit he rarely rides for. The Conductor can smell that this filly is live.

Race 9: 5½ Furlongs. (All-Weather) F.Clm 8000n2L

*Gullet Shot of the Day #2 Imperiously (15/1) – This filly is coming off a year layoff, but her speed figures fit with this group. She’s run well vs tougher on turf and this is an incredibly slow field. Trainer Mary Lightner has a small barn, but is 19% with a positive ROI for the year. She is also 2/15 with a +$0.04 ROI with starters off of 90+ day breaks. If Gaffalione is taking the mount for her, then this filly is is ready to roll.

We couldn’t get the prices home Saturday, but the Conductor is finally back in the writing groove. He’ll be generously posting Thursday – Sunday from now until kingdom come. We’ll be down at Gulfstream until spring has sprung and turf racing returns to New York. A lot of coal to be shoveled until then. Let’s Ride.

Race 3: 1 1/16 Mile. (All-Weather) F.Clm 8000n3L

*Gullet Shot of the Day #3 Its a Birdie (6/1) – This filly was best in the race two back at this level against many of the same contenders, even though she finished 5th. She was only beaten 2 1/2 lengths that day despite being forced 6-wide while she made her move on the turn. They tried sprinting on dirt with her last time, but she was pulled up early after a rough start. The Conductor is completely ignoring that effort. If she can run back to her last race on synthetic with a better trip, she can upset this weak field. The Conductor sees her price being north of 6/1 as well.

Race 7: 5 Furlongs. (All-Weather) F.Clm 16000n3L

#6 Cajun Fantasy (6/1) – This filly ran just fine off the layoff for an unknown trainer last time. Now she drops in class, shortens to 5-furlongs and gets a weight break vs a weak field. She has the early speed to work out a favorable trip and her speed figures on the all-weather fit right in with this group. If she improves at all off that last start, she can win.

Race 9: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) OClm 35000

#3 Smithwick’s Spice (5/1) – This gelding ran a solid 4th last time at Gulfstream with a poor turf trip. He was chasing a quick pace 3-wide and uncovered most of the way and still never quit. The added distance will help him today as well as an inside draw. With an easier journey he can turn the tables on the favorite, Tatanka (2/1).
