Louisiana Derby Saturday Picks — March 25, 2023 | Louisiana Derby Day at Fair Grounds

A dynamic horse race featuring multiple horses and jockeys in colorful silks competing on a dirt track.

A 2nd, 3rd and 4th made for a frustrating Friday at Gulfstream. Whatever, it’s Louisiana Derby Saturday in New Orleans and the Conductor needs to make a pit stop. A nice all stakes pick 5 looks like delicious supper while riding the rails..

The Ductor officially has derby fever. Skip.

Race 8: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) F.100K Tom Benson Memorial Stakes

#6 Didia (3/1) – This Argentinian superstar is 6/7 on turf and 2/2 at the distance. She’s carried her form to the America, where she’s won twice with a thundering late kick. #1 Adventuring (2/1) will take the most money in this race, but the Conductor is against her at a short price. She’s 0/2 at the distance.

Race 9: New Orleans Classic Stakes

#5 Rattle N Roll (10/1) – There is plenty of early speed in this race and that should set things nicely for this colt. He became really good last summer and is now making his 1st start as a 4-year-old. He’s working bullets entering today and his Oklahoma Derby win at this distance gives him a chance here. With natural development as a 4-year old, he’s the value in this race the Conductor will key .

Race 10:  1 1/8 Mile. (Turf) G2 Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes

#7 Another Mystery (6/1) – This race may be a mystery to some, but not the Conductor. This horse was game in defeat last time and the Ductor likes the cutback in distance for him today. #1 Atone (5/2) will be the heavy favorite exiting a Grade 1 victory in the Pegasus, but that was a weak Grade 1 field. With wins at this distance and over this turf course, #7 Another  Mystery will be flying down the stretch under Prat.

Race 11: 1 1/16 Mile. F.G2 Fair Grounds Oaks

#1 Southlawn (8/1) – This is the stinkiest betting race of the sequence with only a 5-horse field and 3 mediocre favorites. However, the Ductor will find value like only he can. This filly returned off the bench last time vs allowance company and was dominant in victory. She made an early move on the back stretch and extended her lead in the lane. That race puts her right with this group on speed figures and she’ll be a nice price. If you don’t play her, this race isn’t bettable.

Race 12: 1 3/16 Mile. G2 Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby

*Gullet Shot of the Day #11 Jace’s Road (12/1) – Throw out this colt’s two races in the slop and he fits right in with this group. He showed talent as a 2-year old and returned at 3 with a strong gate to wire victory over this Fair Grounds dirt surface. There isn’t much early speed in this race and the Conductor sees him getting a favorable trip setting a moderate pace. Cox clearly believes in him despite his poor effort in the slop last time. Its a good sign that Cox runs him here when he has two other contenders in here, including the favorite #2 Instant Coffee (2/1).

The world is a sphere. If you dig a deep enough hole, you come out the other side. Louisiana Derby Day, Skip.

Fair Grounds Race 11: 1 1/8 Mile. G2 New Orleans H.

#1 Roadster (3/1) – A bit of a wild card with a new barn off a long layoff, but hopefully that causes his price to float up. His work tab is solid and he has the early speed to take it to this field. The Conductor trusts Johnny V to be aggressive.

Race 12: 1 1/8 Mile (Turf) G2 Muniz Memorial Classic

*Gullet Shot of the Day #6 Logical Myth (6/1) – The Ductor played him last time and he ran very well with some trouble. Getting back to firm ground today, he loves the Fair Grounds and has every chance vs this field.

Race 13: 1 1/16 Mile. G2 Fair Grounds Oaks

#4 Li’l Tootsie (4/1) – She showed great versatility last time closing in the slop her first time routing. Her sprint effort on dirt two back was very fast and this morning line would be a great price.

Race 14: 1 3/16 G2 Louisiana Derby

#6 Mandaloun (8/5) – Nothing creative here. The Conductor sees him getting the same trip as last time and getting the job done

Race 1: 6 Furlongs. S.Mdn 50k

#8 Malasong (8/1) – This colt took money in his debut and was hung wide. He adds blinkers today and has top connections.

Race 2: 1m70yds. F.S.75K Crescent City Oaks

#3 D’wildcat Indian (8/1) – Steadily progressing and stretching out for the 1st time, the Conductor sees her being better going longer.

Race 3: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) F.S.75K New Orleans Ladies Stakes

#7 La Sola Ranger (8/1) – 2nd off the layoff, this mare ran a thunderous late pace figure closing into a slow pace last start.  This race should heat up on the lead and the Conductor will key her in the tri.

Race 4: 6 Furlongs. S.OC 20000n2x

#2 Big Bella Brown (9/2) – Pressing a hot pace last start, he’ll get first run at the leader. Jose Ortiz hops aboard as well.

Race 5: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.Mdn 50k

#1 Curriusly (20/1) – Getting back to her preferred turf surface, she’s run some very strong late pace figures.  She should get a good trip, saving ground and a getting a hot pace to run at.  The Conductor will key her in the trifecta at a bomb.

Race 6: 1 1/16 Mile. S.75K Crescent City Derby

*Never a Doubt Vegas Bailout Lock of the Day #2 Shang (9/5) – He is going to eviscerate this field.  Absolute standout.

 Race 7: 1 Mile. (Turf) Mdn 50k

#4 Rock On Kitten (9/2) – 2nd off the layoff today, he ran by far the best last race in this field pressing a hot pace and just missing.

Race 8: 1 1/16 Mile. Mdn 50k

#3 Copper King (5/1) – He had a brutal trip in his debut and still closed for a good 2nd into a slow pace.  The Conductor loves that he has experience going this distance as well.

Race 9: 5½ Furlongs. (Turf) S. 60K Costa Rising Stakes

#6 Fame Feather (12/1) – This filly is 4/5 with one 2nd on the Fair Grounds turf course going this distance.  The Conductor will use her in both the horizontal and vertical wagers.

Race 10: 1 1/8 Mile. G2 New Orleans H.

#10 Copper Bullet (4/1) – The Conductor loved her 2nd last time off a layoff in the G3 Razor Back last time and Rated R Superstar came back to win his next race who finished 3rd.  He’ll get a perfect stalking trip just behind the early leaders.

Race 11: 1 1/8 Mile. (Turf) G2 Muniz Memorial H.

#7 Bricks and Mortar (2/1) – The Conductor saw his Pegasus Cup win with his own eyes.  He’s a stud.

Race 12: 1 1/16 Mile. F.G2 Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks

#6 Eres Tu (6/1) – There is a ton of speed signed on in this race and this filly has the best late kick.  With a setup, she’ll have every chance.

Race 13: 1 1/8 Mile. G2 Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby

*Gullet Shot of the Day #4 Sueno (8/1) – This colt is steadily progressing and will like the additional 1/16 of a mile today. The Southwest and Sham Stakes have come back strong and he’ll get a perfect trip sitting just off the #6 War of Will (6/5), who will hopefully be pressured by #10 Spinoff (8/1).
