Black-Eyed Susan Day Picks & Best Bets — Pimlico, Friday, May 17, 2024 | Full Card

Black-Eyed Susan Pimlico

Small fields and off the turf today at Aqueduct, no passenger needs to be playing that slop. The train will be stationed in Maryland for the upcoming Preakness weekend, hopefully the weather cooperates. The forecast looks fine for tomorrow and we have a delectable 14 race card headlined by the Black-Eyed Susan on our plate. Remember to only play the 12% takeout pick 5’s at Pimlico. The takeout rates of every other pool is a complete disgrace. Aim small, miss small, but really never miss at all. Skip.

Race 8: 1 1/8 Mile. F.Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes

*Gullet Shot of the Day #7 Intrepid Dream (8/1) – This mare has found it difficult to stay on the track, but runs well every time. She’s 6/7 lifetime and will be making her 3rd start off a layoff for the first time in her career. She’s stretching out in distance today, but her best races have come routing and her early pace figures give her an advantage over this group. She’ll get an ideal trip pressing a moderate pace and the Ductor sees her being tough to run down in the stretch.

Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Pimliico

Race 10: 6 Furlongs. F.G3 Miss Preakness Stakes

#4 Launch (9/2) – This is a cool filly who came from turf sprints across the pond to find her calling sprinting on the dirt in the US. She’s steadily progressing and 3/3 over a fast dirt track. The Conductor likes that she showed she can stalk and pounce last time too. With lots of other speed in here, sitting just off the pace will be the ideal spot.

Race 12: 1 3/16 Mile. G3 Pimlico Special Stakes

#8 Royal Ship (12/1) – The favorites look tough in here, but this gelding intrigues the Conductor at a price. He has plenty of back class and his speed figures fit with this group. Making his first start for Motion off the bench last time, he showed some early speed after a poor start. That sprint race was a clear prep for this spot anyway, and the aggressive spot 2nd off the bench is a positive sign. Royal Ship will get an ideal Johnny V trip pressing a slow pace and is very dangerous.

Race 13: 1 1/8 Mile. F.G2 Black-Eyed Susan Sakes

#4 Call Another Play (8/1) – This is a very slow group of fillies for this rendition of the Black-Eyed Susan. The Conductor will take a shot with a filly who is in great form and improving with each start. Coming from the claiming ranks just three starts back, she’s answered the bell with each step up in class. The added distance has clearly been a key to her success, and she’s one of a only a few fillies in here you can count on to be finishing late. She probably needs to take another step forward to win here, but the price should be right and Rachel Alexandra is certainly not in this field.

Pimlico: Key Horses for Thursday, October 1

Horses racing at Pimlico Race Course with a large crowd in the background.

Not often do we get stakes racing on a Thursday, so the Conductor will put Pimlico on his lunch menu. Let’s Eat.

Pimlico

Race 8: 5 Furlongs. (Turf) F. The Very One Stakes

#3 A Great Time (10/1) – Exiting a nice win on the synthetic, she also ran well at big odds in a stakes race at Belmont two back on the turf. This old mare is in good form and loves to hit the board.

#1 Giggling (20/1) – She’s run well her efforts his year, including a very fast last race. All three of those races have been rained off the turf and she’ll get to try the lawn again today. She’s only been on grass twice and hasn’t shown much, but both were last year and seems to be much improved as a 3-year-old.

Race 9: 6 Furlongs. G3 Chick Lang Stakes

*Throat Shot Thursday Play of the Day #10 Arkaan (6/1) – Cutting back to a sprint here, this colt ran well in his first try at Pimlico going two turns last time. He held onto third after setting the pace and didn’t throw in the towel early. The winner of that race, Pneumatic, is a colt that he Conductor really likes in the Preakness Saturday. Arkaan gets a nice outside draw today with the horse to beat #9 Yaupon (4/5) to his inside.

Props to Pimlico on putting together a great Friday card. Full 14 race plays will be up Friday, but the Conductor will preview the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Day pick 5, which will get most of his attention. A big Friday means we can go for the jugular on Saturday and we know how much the Conductor like to kill. Let’s Ride.

Race 7: 6 Furlongs. F. Skipat Stakes 100k

#3 Chalon (6/5) – Nothing like starting the pick 5 with a stone cold single.  We’ll find out if we’re alive or dead right from the jump. She looks like a clear stand out.

Race 8: 6 Furlongs. F. G3 Adena Springs Miss Preakness Stakes

#2 Covfefe (7/2) – She’s the lone A for the Conductor and he’ll heavily press her. 2 of her 3 career races blow this field away.

#1 Iva (15/1), #6 Never Enough Time (6/1), #7 Miss Imperial (8/1), #10 By Bye Jay (12/1), #11 Fighting Mad (4/1), and #12 Midnight Fantasy (12/1) will be used as backups.

#12 Midnight Fantasy (12/1) – She’s undefeated sprinting and is the price the Conductor will key in the trifecta.

Race 9: 1 Mile. (Turf) F. Hilltop Stakes 100k

#2 Nova Sol (7/2), #5 Dogtag (9/2) – Chad Brown wins every turf race.

#12 Orra Moor (10/1) – If there is somebody that can beat Chad, it’s Todd.  This girl has run quality races on the dirt vs tough competition, if her form can translate to the turf she’ll be dangerous.

Race 10: 1 ¼ Mile. G3 Pimlico Special Stakes

This is going to be a spread race for the Conductor, this field is wide open and almost everyone has a chance.

#7 Just Whistle (20/1) – This is the Conductor’s favorite bomb in here and the one he’ll be keying in the exacta and trifecta. The distance will be no problem with his strong late pace figures and his last race was better than it looks, trying to close into a tepid pace on a speed favoring track. He can make the Conductor’s day.

Race 11: 1 1/8 Mile. F.G2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes

#7 Brill (5/1) – Making her 3rd start off the layoff, she looks to get a perfect trip sitting just behind the leaders.  She has loads of talent and her last race in the Fantasy stakes has come back live.

#8 Point of Honor (5/2) – Her late pace figures are thunderous.  If she gets any pace to run at she’ll be tough to beat.

#2 Off Topic (8/1) – She’s the price the Conductor likes most.  She’s a closer who caught a slow pace last start.  She won’t surprise the Conductor.
