Win: #18 Further Ado (currently 6/1)

The Conductor is going with #18 Further Ado in the Derby, currently at 6/1. He’s the most talented horse in the race, and the Conductor sees Johnny V giving him a good ride. The race dynamics have changed a lot with the scratches. Cheap speed has drawn in from the outside, and there will be a quicker pace than anticipated earlier in the week.

Longshot to Hit the Board – #11 Incredibolt (26/1)

If you’re looking for a longshot to hit the board, the Conductor’s favorite price at the moment is #11 Incredibolt at 26/1. He dusted a weak field last time. However, he didn’t have a great trip and ran a big late pace figure. He can make the trifecta and superfecta pay.

Kentucky Derby Saturday: Best Bets and Analysis

Raging Sea made it a solid Oaks Friday for the Conductor. But Oaks Friday just determines the amount of coal you have to fire on Saturday. Let’s make it a Derby Day to remember. Skip.

Race 3: 1 1/16 Mile. OC 125000n1x

#3 Valentinian (6/1) – This colt has impressed the Conductor in his first two starts. He’s closed into slow paces and run huge late pace figures. His last race at Keeneland was against an inside speed bias too. The only horse who can beat him in the race is #5 Goal Oriented (4/1). He’s a Baffert monster that looked like the goods on debut.

Race 4: 1 Mile. Knicks Go Overnight Stakes

#12 Patriot Spirit (8/1) – This colt got caught in a wicked pace duel stretching out in distance last time. He has numbers to run back to that can win this race, and he looks primed to run his best shortening back to a mile. Patriot Spirit should get an ideal outside stalking trip and pounce as they enter the stretch.

Race 6: 1 Mile. G2 Pat Day Mile

#2 Built (7/2) – This colt made an early move into a hot pace going longer in the Louisiana Derby last time. Now he finally gets off the Derby trail and cuts back to a more favorable distance for him. The Conductor thinks he’s the most talented runner in the field and 7/2 or better is more than fair.

Race 10: 7 Furlongs. F.G1 Derby City Distaff

#2 Kopion (8/1) – This morning line is terrible. Kopion will probably vie for favoritism in the 3/1 range. Even so, the Conductor thinks she lays over this field. The other contenders are coming off layoffs hoping to fire their best while Kopian is in razor sharp form.

Race 12: 1 1/14 G1 Kentucky Derby

After scratches, there are only 7 contenders that can win this race. #3 Final Gambit (15/1), #5 American Promise (12/1), #7 Luxor Cafe (9/1), #8 Journalism (7/2), #18 Sovereignty (9/1) and #21 Baeza (18/1).

Journalism is certainly the one to beat, and Sovereignty is no slouch as well. At the current prices however, the Conductor is going to play #21 Baeza (18/1). He’s improving with each start and trainer John Shirreffs takes his time developing his horses. He had a wide trip in the Santa Anita Derby and was very game when Journalism came running in the stretch. He gets a dirt rider upgrade to Prat today and the Conductor trusts he can work out a trip despite the far outside post. The Conductor sees him taking the lead as they turn for home and it will be up to the closers to run him down. At 18/1 the Conductor will certainly pay to find out.

Kentucky Derby 2023 Picks & Breakdown — May 6, 2023 | The Conductor’s Derby Day Plays

A 30/1 exacta to kick off Oaks Friday for the Conductor had him out for blood. However, his water pistol came up empty the rest of the card. Onto the big day. This has been one of the strangest weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby the Conductor can remember. Four scratches and now a 19 horse field. Only Mr. Ductor can help us in a race like this, Let’s Ride.

#1 Hit Show (30/1) – Exiting the Wood Memorial, the weakest prep race, this colt certainly won’t win. However, he does have strong late pace figures and will get a ground saving trip near the back of the pack. He’ll be off everyone’s tickets and the Conductor can see him sneaking up the rail to hit the superfecta. At best he finishes 4th.

#2 Verifying (15/1)

He’s steadily progressing and ran very well in the Blue Grass. There’s nothing to knock and he wouldn’t shock the Conductor if he pulled the upset. But, like most of the others in here he’s nothing special, the Conductor will be using him underneath only. At best he finishes 2nd.

#3 Two Phil’s (12/1) – He’s coming in with the fastest American speed figure, but it was over synthetic. Can he translate it to dirt? The Conductor says no at a relatively short price. He’s scared to chuck him out of the trifecta completely because he does have upside, but we have to make stands in this race. At best he finishes 2nd.

#4 Confidence Game (20/1) – He’s been working well since his win in the sloppy Rebel over two months ago. Winning is asking too much, but he’s a bomb the Conductor won’t chuck out of the trifecta. He’ll be forwardly placed in a Kentucky Derby without a ton of early speed. Desormeax does well with runners off these types of breaks too. He’s 19% with a +$1.22 ROI with starters returning off 46-90 day layoffs. At best he finishes 3rd.

#5 Tapit Trice (5/1)

He can win this race and has done nothing wrong. He’s shown he can overcome trouble and has run strong late pace figures every time. He’ll be on a few backup tickets for the Conductor, but he wont be leaning on him at a short price.

#6 Kingsbarns (12/1) – He set the slowest early pace imaginable in the Louisiana Derby and had no choice but to win. He’ll be forced to use much more early speed and will have to show a new dimension for the first time. He’s not for the the Conductor. Toss

#7 Reincarnate (50/1) – The Conductor would love to use him, but there’s not much to like. He looks to be a cut below the contenders. toss.

#8 Mage (15/1)

The Conductor is higher on this horse than most of the public. He overcame a very poor start in the Florida Derby and made a eye catching middle move. If he can finally break well today the Conductor thinks he’ll be in the mix at the top of the stretch. The distance may be just a little to far for him. Mr. Ductor won’t talk you off him, but at best he finishes 2nd on his tickets.

#11 Disarm (30/1) – He’s a tricky one for the Conductor. He ran really well in the Louisiana Derby two starts back where he closed strongly behind the aforementioned crawling pace. However, his Lexington effort left a lot to be desired. The Conductor may use him in 4th in the superfecta, but no higher.

#12 Jace’s Road (50-1) – The Conductor thinks Cox will send this horse with his major contenders being closers. He’ll show early speed and then fade to the back of the pack. Toss.

#13 Sun Thunder (50/1) – He needs to step forward to hit the board and there are too many other solid closers in the field to warrant consideration from the Ductor. Toss

#14 Angel of Empire (8/1)

He continues to progress for Cox and another legitimate contender that is tough to knock. He can win this race, but will have to do it from the back of the back. The Conductor is slightly against him at a short price. He will allow him to finish 2nd and no better.

#15 Forte (3/1)

He’s the worst kind of favorite for the Ductor. The Conductor either wants to love him or hate him and he’s apathetic towards this colt. The Conductor thinks he’ll run well and hit the board. But, at a short price he’s a deep closer and the Ductor projects a moderate early pace. Another Derby favorite that will be looking to ruin the Ductor’s Day.

#16 Raise Cain (50/1) – Unless it’s muddy, the Conductor can’t make a case. Toss.

*Gullet Shot of the 2023 Kentucky Derby #17 Derma Sotogake (10/1)

“Mr. Ductor this is the longest thing I’ve read in weeks. I’m usually listen to audio books only on the train, when will you get to the horse you love?” Shut up and sit down passenger, we’re finally here. You can throw a blanket around 6 or 7 horses in this race that are tough to separate, but there is only one potential superstar. This Japanese import made a mockery of the UAE Derby and couldn’t have looked better doing it. Japan has dominated racing across the globe as of late and this year they stamp their dominance in the Kentucky Derby. The Conductor has been a sucker with the UAE shippers before, but this one’s different. He loved his work over the Churchill track and he looks to get a great trip tracking a moderate pace. He’s versatile enough to work his own trip and he’s more talented than the rest. Let sake be the Conductor’s Saturday Stew of Choice. Skip.

#18 Rocket Can (30/1) – He’s a cut below this group and looks to get a wide trip with his running style. Toss.

#21 Cyclone Mischief (20/1) – The Conductor will like this colt when he cuts back in distance vs weaker, not today. Toss.

*Bonus 2023 Kentucky Derby Esophagus Slice #22 Mandarin Hero (20/1)

The Conductor was hoping the other Japanese colt would draw in and he got his wish. This colt is as gritty as they come and is on the improve. It doesn’t matter what the surface or distance, if you run up next to this boy he’s going to fight you tooth and nail to the wire. The Conductor liked his Santa Anita Derby effort and thinks he wins that race if they kept running another 1/8 of a mile…which they do today. If Derma Sotogake loses, the Conductor will be hoping its to his country mate.

The Conductor’s head is spinning, three Kentucky Derby scratches and we’re not even at Oaks Day. This weekend is going to be a war, but a war we shall win. Start turning a jack, laying track, and pick up a shovel too. Let’s Ride.

Race 6: 1 Mile. Knicks Go Overnight Stakes

*Gullet Shot of the Day #7 Three Technique (20/1) – This one turn mile is loaded with early pace and it looks ripe for an upset. Three Technique’s best races have come at this distance, including a 2nd by a neck at Churchill behind Cody’s Wish last summer. Cody’s Wish would be 1/5 in this race. They prepped Three technique off the bench for this race too, and it went exactly as planned. He  ran evenly at too short of a distance for him. Now, he stretches out to his best distance and looks to get an ideal pace scenario. The Conductor will be shocked if he doesn’t hit the trifecta at a juicy number.

Race 8: 1 Mile. G2 Pat Day Mile Stakes

#7 Fort Bragg (9/2) – Another one turn mile, another race with a wicked pace. This is one of the Conductor’s favorite races every Derby undercard. He’s collected copious amounts of coal over the years from this affair, and this year looks no different. This colt looks primed for a cutback to one turn exiting the Kentucky Derby trail. He’s pressed hot paces against much tougher and proven he can’t get two turns against the top competition. There’s no shame in that, 9/2 is just fine in this spot.

Race 10: 7 Furlongs. G1 Churchill Downs Stakes

#10 Endorsed (5/1) – The aforementioned #7 Cody’s Wish (4/5) is clearly the one to beat, but he’ll be up against it off the layoff and the pace scenario. This race has absolutely no early speed for a sprint. You could get into the stew and make a case for #8 Fortin Hill (20/1) to wire them. However, the Conductor thinks Gaffalione will be aggressive like last time and have Endorsed pressing the pace. Endorsed has turned into a new animal this year and will be tough to run down in the stretch if he gets the jump on Cody’s Wish. The Conductor will certainly take a shot at 5x the price.

Baffert Can’t Wriggle Out of the One: Goes Palms Up Again

Pretty calm Sunday morning with the Kentucky Derby winner getting popped for a drug violation. Baffert has finally faced some media criticism this year with other positives, and it culminates with a positive test in the Derby.

Another black eye for the game, that is hopefully a good thing in the long run. Baffert is the king of the cheaters and has been doing it for decades. Even if he slithers his way out of this one, his reputation is tarnished and the other cheaters will be treading lightly for a while.

Its truly impressive that he gives the “It wasn’t me” excuse every time, not an ounce of accountability at any point. Probably will blame a groom, the feed, or the lab at some point soon. Baffert is just as bad for the game as Servis and Navarro, but he’s the face of US racing, so he’s Teflon Don. Its not like Bob is the only one, he’s just the best at it. He wins every major dirt race and looks, walks and talks the part. He’s been defended for years by 90% of the horse racing media shills, who can Justify every question mark.

The bottom line is big name trainers getting national media coverage for cheating should speed up cleaning up the game. That’s best for everyone involved in the industry and most importantly the horses. There are plenty more on the list, but Baffert is at the top. Get him out of the game.

Race 12: 1 1/4 G1 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve

*#15 Rock Your World (5/1) – His Santa Anita Derby was the most impressive prep for the Ductor. Watching all of his races, this colt really finishes strong and gallops out massive. He doesn’t need the lead and the Conductor thinks he’s the most talented runner in the field.

*#12 Helium (50/1) – This is the bomb the Conductor likes most in here and his key in the superfecta. Please watch his Tampa Bay Derby win. Was it the toughest field? No, but he had no business winning that race with that trip. He’s lightly raced, has room to step forward and has proven he can handle adversity where all these others haven’t. All the other prep winners have gotten favorable trips.

Other Win Contenders:

#8 Medina Spirit (15/1) – He never looked comfortable in the Santa Anita Derby grinding away in the 3 path. He never quit to get 2nd and the Conductor thinks Baffert is going to send him to the front early, where he’s runs his best.

#9 Hot Rod Charlie (8/1) – He was very game in his win in the Louisiana Derby and he has a solid foundation from last year. He has the talent to step forward and win his race.

#14 Essential Quality (2/1) – He’s tough to knock, but the Conductor will only be using him in 2nd and 3rd. He’ll be the heavy favorite, but he hasn’t improved much from last year. He’ll run his race.

#1 Known Agenda (6/1) – He’s turned into a new animal with blinkers, but the Conductor sees him as an underlay here. He got a favorable trip in a weak Florida Derby and will be over bet. The Conductor won’t use him on top.

Trifecta/Superfecta Prices to include:

#4 Keepmeinmind (50/1) – He hasn’t had any pace to run at in his two races this year. Taking the blinkers off an working well, he’s lit up the trifecta before.

*#6 O Besos (20/1) – He finished very well and galloped out past Hot Rod Charlie in the Louisiana Derby. He split horses on the inside and may have threatened to win with a cleaner trip. The Conductor will use him up to 2nd.

#13 Hidden Stash (50/1) – He was up against the pace scenario last time in the Blue Grass, but still finished well. He could clunk up for 4th at a huge number.

#16 King Fury (20/1) – His win last time may have been pace and slop aided, but it was still a strong effort and he flashed talent last year. Making his 2nd start as a 3 year old, he could take a big step forward here.

*#18 Super Stock (30/1) – He pulled a major upset in the Arkansas Derby and will be completely ignored at the windows. He got a perfect ride and trip that day, but he still beat very talented runners in Concert Tour and Cado River. He’ll get pace again to run at here and the Ductor will use him in some exactas.

Race 7: 7 Furlongs. F.G1 Derby City Distaff Stakes

#4 Gamine (1/5) – As the lone speed, not a good betting race.

Race 8: 1 Mile. G2 Pat Day Mile Stakes

#8 Dream Shake (7/2) – He’s run well in the strongest Derby prep races. Cutting back to a mile, the Conductor will lean on him hard.

#4 Defunded (6/1) – He ran better than it looks behind Dream Shake last time with a patented wide trip by Mike Smith. Although the pace was quick, the race flow favored the frontrunners and he made a nice middle move. Blinkers off, Irad and Baffert, he could take a big step forward.

Race 9: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) G2 American Turf Stakes

#13 Scarlett Sky (4/1) – This race looks to set up for a closer and this colt has the best late kick of the bunch. His win in the Transylvania was very impressive.

#6 Royale Prince (12/1) – He continues to steadily progress and now steps up in class for the always dangerous Cox barn. He looks to get a good trip and the Conductor sees him running a top effort.

#10 Next (20/1) – After showing ability on dirt last fall, connections thrust him into the BC Juvenile where he still hasn’t finished. Making his first start as a 3 year old here, he’s working well for strong Ward and gets back to the surface he’s bred for. His lone turf start last year was a nice win sprinting and he’s proven he can get the distance on dirt. At a big price, the Conductor likes his upside.

Race 10: 7 Furlongs. G1 Churchill Downs Stakes

#5 Tap It To Win (8/1) – This race is wide open in the Conductor’s opinion and doesn’t have a ton of early pace for a sprint. The Conductor liked his prep off the bench last time where he easily took care of business. He can but himself in a great position early and work out a nice trip.

#3 Basin (8/1) – Making his 2nd start as a 4 year old, this colt is back to sprinting where he’s best. He’s still progressing and has yet to run a bad race at 6 or 7 furlongs. He ran well on the Derby trail last year despite the distances being to far.

#8 Get the Prize (20/1) – Stepping up in class big time after winning at Keeneland, this horse will likely be the leader early. He’s on the improve and if he can get away with moderate fractions he’s dangerous.

Race 11: 1 1/8 Mile. (Turf) G1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes

#5 Domestic Spending (9/2) – You can make a case for almost every runner in this group, but the Conductor will lean on this gelding. Making his first start at 4, he ran monster races last year closing into slow paces.

#4 Ivar (5/1) – His win in the Shadwell Turf Mile last year was the best performance this field has in the Conductor’s opinion. He should like the added distance as well.

#5 Landeskog (5/2) – This gelding won his prep nicely off the layoff last time and is working well entering today. He’s shown the Conductor he has talent in his young career and the Conductor will single to start of this bad boy.

Race 8: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) Laurel Futurity

#6 Arrest Me Red (6/1) – He won his debut easily and stretches out for the first time today. Trainer Arnaud Delacor is a ridiculous 38% with a +$0.89 ROI with horses at a route this year.

Other contenders: 1,3,7,8,10

Race 9: 1 Mile. (Turf) James W. Murphy Stakes

#9 Monday Morning QB (8/1) – Nothing would surprise the Conductor in this race, but he would love anything close to 8/1 on this colt. 2nd off the layoff, he’s steadily progressing and has yet to run a bad race. If he can translate his dirt form to turf he will have a major chance.

Race 10: 1 1/8 Mile. F.G2 George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes

#3 So Darn Hot (6/1) – The Conductor was very impressed by this filly’s maiden breaker in June. She ran a decent comeback race in the slop with a wide trip last time and the Conductor sees her sitting on a big one today.

Race 1: 1 Mile. (Turf) Alw 50000s

#5 Tom’s Last General (9/2) – He just missed last start setting a hot pace vs similar competition. He should get a favorable trip without much other speed in here.

Race 2: 6 Furlongs. F.OC 80000n3x

#6 Magical (6/1) – This filly is making her first start of the year, but the layoff is no concern with top connections.  She has an earl pace edge over this field, which is very dangerous in any sprint.

Race 3: 7 Furlongs. F.OC 75000n1x

*Never a Doubt Early Pick 5 Lock of the Day #3 Lady Kate (5/2) – Cutting back 2nd off the layoff after pressing a hot pace vs Grade 1 company, she’s going to bury them.

#4 Heirloom Kitten (12/1) – The Conductor doesn’t particularly like the runners with experience in here and he likes this colt’s work tab.

*Gullet Shot of the Day #8 Bizwhacks (20/1) – She ran sneaky good in the Ashland last start and is steadily progressing. The Conductor loves the cutback and will key her in the trifecta.

#11 Free Cover (5/1) – Going two sprints to a route in her 3rd start off the layoff, the Conductor thinks she is the most talented filly in the field.

Kentucky Derby Day Stakes Pick 6 Preview

Looks like rain for both Friday and Saturday can be counted on and the scratch of Omaha Beach has made everyone lose their minds.  The Conductor’s eyes are bleeding from all of the capping this week and rest assured he is not done. Full card plays for the Oaks card will be up in the morning and the same for the Kentucky Derby Day Saturday morning.  This is why we bet all of those Tuesday’s at Parx. Sharpen the axe, Let’s Ride.

Race 7: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.G2 Longines Distaff Turf Mile

#4 Beau Recall (10/1), #5 Daddy is a Legend (5/1), #6 Precieuse (3/1), #8 Got Stormy (8/1) are all win contenders the Conductor will be using on top, but his top pick and key in the exacta and trifecta will be the “other” Chad Brown filly #9 Environs (8/1). She blew away the field with ease in her prep race for this spot, which was also her first start in America.  She’s won multiple times over soft turf and a step forward off that last effort gives her every chance.

Race 8: 7 Furlongs. G1 Churchill Downs Stakes

Another spread race for the Conductor, this is a horserace. He’ll use #1 Do Share (10/1), #3 Majestic Dunhill (30/1), #6 Promises Fulfilled (4/1), #8 Mitole (7/2), #9 Uncontested (10/1) and #12 Whitmore (4/1) on top.

#3 Majestic Dunhill (30/1) – The Conductor will key this bomb in the trifecta with the other horses surrounding him in each spot as well. He had no pace to run at last start over a speed favoring Keeneland track and still ran a strong late pace figure to split the field.  He’ll get a perfect setup in here and will make the Conductor a rich man when he hits the board.

Race 9: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) G2 American Turf Stakes

#2 Social Paranoia (10/1) – The Conductor doesn’t care that it was a maiden score last start, you don’t see bigger beatdowns on turf than his last start.  He’s steadily progressing and 10/1 would be more than juicy. The Conductor will use him, #3 Digital Age (6/1) and #8 Avie’s Flatter (6/1) in this leg.

Race 10: 1 Mile. G3 Pat Day Mile

#10 Instagrand (6/5) – Cutting back to a mile he’s clearly the one to beat, if he doesn’t win you can make a case for anyone else in the field.

#7 Mr. Money (12/1) – The only other horse the Conductor will use on top here, he’s been up close to solid paces vs very tough competition in his last 3 starts. The shorter distance will be perfect for him.

Race 11: 1 1/8 Mile. (Turf) G1 Old Forester Turf Classic

Another very difficult race, but the Conductor will only use 3. #9 Synchrony (8/1) and #12 Bricks and Mortar (5/2) are the class of the field, but the Conductor will also use #8 Ticonderoga (8/1). Ticonderoga has really progressed in his last few starts and has a thunderous late punch.  He looks primed to run a monster race.

The Conductor will use #3 By My Standards (20/1), #5 Improbable (6/1), #8 Tacitus (10/1), #14 Win Win Win (15/1) and #16 Game Winner (5/1).  On a few tickets the Conductor will get greedy and use only the 3 non-Bafferts on top.
